We see mini-pupillage as useful both for potential applicants and for chambers. Mini-pupillage provides the opportunity to obtain experience of the work we do and of the atmosphere in chambers.
Those accepted for mini-pupillage will spend two days in chambers (usually with both junior members but sometimes also with QCs) attending court and conferences and studying sets of papers. Mini-pupils will be asked to sign a confidentiality undertaking upon arrival. They may also be asked to complete a piece of written work during their time in chambers.
There are a limited number of places available for mini-pupillage each year and these are confined to the court terms. They are always heavily over-subscribed, particularly during June and July. We find that mini-pupils obtain the most from the experience if they come to chambers after at least a year of an undergraduate law degree or, if they are converting to law, after part of the CPE/GDL course. Mini-pupils are generally accepted if it appears that they would be considered as potential pupils in the future and there is space to accommodate them.
Applications for mini-pupillage are considered twice a year. Individuals seeking a mini-pupillage in the period June to November should apply by 30 April and those seeking a place for the period December to May should apply by 15 November, each year. Late applications can not be considered.
Applications should be made with a covering letter and curriculum vitae (listing all undergraduate grades) and sent clearly marked 'Mini-pupillage' to the Pupillage Secretary.
Maitland Chambers operates an Equality and Diversity policy, further details of which can be found on the Pupillage page by clicking here. We therefore encourage applications for mini-pupillages from people from all sections of society.
